　　貝特麗絲·塔爾頓從來都是忙忙碌碌的，需要她親手照料的不但有大片棉花地、上百名黑人奴仆、八個子女，還有全州最大的養馬場。她脾氣特別暴躁，她那四個兒子又常常惹是生非，所以她經常對他們大發雷霆。盡管她不許任何人鞭打馬匹或黑奴，可她自己卻覺得時不時地抽上他們一頓是不會對他們有任何傷害的。

　　“她當然不會打博伊德。她一向就沒怎麽打過博伊德，因為他是老大，再說我們哥兒幾個就數他個頭兒最矮。”斯圖爾特說著露出了得意的神情，很為自己六英尺二英寸的身高感到自豪，“所以我們就讓他留在家給媽媽解釋。真是活見鬼，媽媽早就不該再打我們了！我倆都十九歲了，湯姆都二十一了，可她還把我們當六歲頑童對待。”

　　“明天去韋爾克斯家的燒烤會，你媽媽會不會騎那匹新來的馬?”

　　“她是想騎，可是爸爸說騎那匹馬太危險。再說那幾個丫頭也不會答應。她們說至少參加某一個晚會要讓她像個貴婦人一樣，坐馬車去。”

　　“明天可別下雨，”斯佳麗說，“差不多一連下了一個禮拜了。要是燒烤野餐吃不成，都擠在屋裡吃飯，那可是再倒霉不過的事了。”

　　“She wants to， but Pa says he’s too dangerous. And，

anyway， the girls won’t let her. They said they were going to have her go to one party at least like a lady， riding in the carriage.”　　“I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow，” said Scarlett.“It’s rained nearly every day for a week. There’s nothing worse than a barbecue turned into an indoor ”

　　“Oh， it’ll be clear tomorrow and hot as June，” said Stuart.“Look at that sunset. I never saw one redder. You can always tell weather by sunsets.”

　　這是美國南北戰爭前夕一個南方有錢莊園主的家，女主人操持家庭事務。家，血緣連接起來及男人和女人通過契約組合在一起共同生活的地方，父母親與子女們，血緣共同體及利益共同體，子女教育，則是有關塑造未來的活動。如何教育培養子女，有社會規定及習俗規范，目的是為了好，教育培養途徑則因不同家庭具體情況名異。

　　美國南北戰爭爆發前夕南方各有錢莊園主之間經常互相宴請、舉辦燒烤會並舞會，有錢莊園主的公子小姐們均可出席，其間吃、喝、玩、樂找帥哥、找美女打情罵俏已是客觀習俗，這對於這些有錢莊園主的公子小姐們來說，真的是“好一個人間幸福天堂”啊。

　　美國南北戰爭爆發前夕，一塊神奇的土地，一群神奇的生活於其間的人們。
