　　“噢，明天準會放晴，會熱得像六月天，”斯圖爾特說，“瞧那落日。我還從來沒見過那麽紅的太陽。憑落日就可以判斷天氣。”

　　他們朝傑拉爾德·奧哈拉家的土地遠遠望去，只見這片新犁過的棉花地連綿不斷，一直延伸到火紅的天邊。此刻太陽正緩緩落到富林河對岸的山巒背後，把天空映照得一片深紅。四月裡暖和的空氣也漸漸降溫，透出些許讓人舒服的涼意。

　　那一年的春天來得很早，不時喜降春雨，溫暖而急促。粉紅的桃花忽然綻開，和雪白的山茱萸互相映襯，把遠山和黑色的河岸裝點得十分好看。春耕就快結束了，落日的余暉給佐治亞州紅土地剛犁起來的地壟上抹了一層油彩，把土染得更紅了。翻起來的濕潤泥土，正翹首企盼著棉花籽，道道壟溝的頂端都呈現淺紅色，壟溝背陰面呈現朱砂紅、猩紅和栗色。農場中那座通體白色的磚房宛如一座島嶼，處在一片波濤起伏的紅色海面上，海面渦流回旋，白浪翻卷，頂作淺紅的波濤撞碎的那一刻，狀如新月的浪尖忽然凝固。這地方沒有那種綿長筆直的壟溝，能見到那種壟溝的地方是在佐治亞中部平坦的黃土地，或是在海邊種植園裡肥沃的黑土地上。而在佐治亞北部延綿起伏的丘陵地帶，田地都犁成無數道彎彎曲曲的壟溝，防止肥沃的土壤隨水流失，被衝到低處的河底去。

　　人與自然。

　　美國南北戰爭前夕的美國南方，農耕社會的美國南方，落日下的肥沃土地，美麗的風景。

　　上面摘錄的原著文字，若以一個旅遊者的眼光觀之，首先感知的是地球之於太陽的關聯關系。地球在與太陽互動，而且就常識言，大家都清楚地球上的熱量主要來自於太陽光，可見太陽之於地球的重要性。如果我是個孩童，我非常驚訝於這太陽為啥就這麽掛在天空而不掉下來。後來長大了，知識豐富了，明白了地球與太陽間、地球與其他星體間的互動原因，也明白了地球之上的早晚變化、一年四季變化、晴天雨天雪天風天變化的原因。但是，地球與太陽間、地球與其他星體間源於引力的準確互動的內在機裡，依然是個謎。

　　其次感知的是人類活動之於環境的變化。人類是群居而成社會的，人類組成社會形成合力與自然溝通交流，利用自然，改變自然。
